This fell short, Mokbel’s mouthpiece argued, of establishing that the pair had committed the crime of plotting to traffic amphetamine. In the meantime Kiwi Joe, who was also acquitted of the traffic charge, had pled guilty to an amended count – conspiracy to possess a drug of dependence. But for Mokbel the legal win meant a key in the latch, civilian clothes and a walk from prison to freedom.

Hardboiled ex-copper Brian ‘the Skull’ Murphy had come across a teenage Mokbel playing up and given him a kick in the arse as a warning. ’ He might have been a high-school dropout disliked by the local constabulary, but Antonios was no unemployed teen waster. Rather he was finding time for trouble on top of a busy working life and a regular girlfriend. On leaving school Mokbel worked as a bouncer and got a job washing pots out the back of now defunct Carlton pasta and pizza restaurant, Spaghetti Graffiti.
