About 100 million years ago the climate was still warm and moist across the plateau, as it was throughout most of the world. The far southern parts of Tibet were mostly under water on the Indian plate, which was moving north. Volcanoes were erupting in the sea between India and Tibet, and Gangs-ti-se and gNyanchen-thang-lha were forming on the edge of Asia.

This theory is supported by the decreasing age of mountain ranges from north to south, and by the presence of what appear to be suture zones running across the plateau.

The rising of the plateau not only dried out inland bodies of water, but converted fresh water lakes to salt water ones. Minerals and salts from natural erosion of rock are always present in lakes, so as lake water evaporated, the water that remained grew increasingly saline. The northern part of the plateau seems to have suffered most from this process, and great salt deposits are found across northern Byang-thang around drying lakes. The lakes in southern Byang-thang are large, and some are freshwater, while the southeast has numerous fresh-water lakes.
